The Japanese language has many many words which are pronounced the same but written differently- some times twenty in a group- so the Japanese speaker trusts eyes before ears.
/l/ and /r/ are both pronounced as a Japanese /r/,causing confusion  in pairs like glamour and grammar, election and erection.
